Public IP vs. Local IP: What's the Difference?
It's important to know that you have two types of IP addresses.
Your Public IP Address (which this tool finds) is your unique identifier on the global internet. It's assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and is used when you visit websites. Think of it as your home's street address.
Your Local IP Address is a private address used only inside your home or office network. It's how your router identifies your specific computer, phone, or smart TV. Think of it as your room number inside your home. The guides below show how to find this local IP.
How to Find Your Local IP Address
On a Windows PC
- Press the Windows Key + R to open the "Run" dialog.
- Type
cmdand press Enter to open the Command Prompt. - In the black window, type
ipconfigand press Enter. - Look for the "IPv4 Address" line. The number next to it (e.g.,
192.168.1.10) is your local IP address.
On an Apple Mac
- Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner.
- Go to System Settings (on newer macOS) or System Preferences (on older macOS).
- Click on Network.
- Select your active connection on the left (e.g., Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
- Your local IP address will be displayed on the right (e.g., "IP Address:
192.168.1.12").
